KIHOMAC Awarded F-35 MXU-1072/A Advanced Travel Pod Contract

KIHOMAC, Inc. has been awarded the F-35 MXU-1072/A Advanced Travel Pod contract, a $7 million Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) award issued by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC). This milestone launches the next phase of production for KIHOMAC’s internally developed MXU-1072/A, a modern, mission-focused travel pod built for 5th-generation fighter aircraft.

Unlike legacy designs, the MXU-1072/A ATP uses advanced composite materials to create a lightweight yet durable pod structure. These materials increase damage resistance, improve environmental protection, and expand volumetric cargo capacity. The pod also provides a longer service life compared to traditional aluminum or steel alternatives.

KIHOMAC engineers based the ATP design on the MXU-648 travel pod but introduced substantial improvements. They incorporated direct feedback from Air Force maintainers and operators to meet long-standing operational needs. The result includes:

  • Larger access panels with multiple entry points

  • Simplified carry features for ground crews

  • Anti-roll stabilizers for safe transport

  • An adjustable cargo stabilization system for secure loading

These upgrades complement the ATP’s cylindrical shape, which allows for end-to-end loadouts and oversized cargo entry.

The MXU-1072/A directly supports Agile Combat Employment (ACE) by increasing aircraft self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on separate cargo transport. It can carry a wide range of deployment gear, support equipment, and spare parts—all on the aircraft itself.

This contract marks the first new travel pod design in over 30 years to be deployed for active use. With this win, KIHOMAC reinforces its role as a forward-thinking aerospace partner, committed to mission flexibility, operational efficiency, and cutting-edge manufacturing.
